The Heart of the Reformation: Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Sola Scriptura

What Are the “Solas”?

The Latin word sola means “alone.” During the Protestant Reformation, three key “solas” emerged as rallying cries for reformers seeking to return to the core of Christian faith. These principles aren’t just historical slogans—they’re living truths that continue to shape how we understand salvation, grace, and authority in the church today.

Sola Fide — Faith Alone

We are justified before God not by our works, but by faith in Jesus Christ.

  • This doctrine affirms that salvation is received through faith alone, not earned through good deeds or religious rituals.

  • Martin Luther called it the “article by which the church stands or falls.”

  • Faith is not a human achievement—it’s trust in the promise of Christ’s redeeming work.

“For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.” — Romans 3:28
